ROLE-PLAYING GAMES

Wherever we walk, Nyarlathotep has walked that path long before we were conceived, and he will walk that same path long after our memories are forgotten and our bodies nothing more than corrupted dust.
          — “Darkest Calling” THE STARS ARE RIGHT!

Call of Cthulhu

Since 1982 Chaosium Inc. has published their highly successful Call of Cthulhu role-playing game based on the Cthulhu Mythos creations of H.P. Lovecraft and others. Following are scenarios set in that gaming world. Some of these scenarios are set in the Delta Green setting of modern conspiracy created by the Call of Cthulhu licensee company Pagan Publishing.

THE JERMYN HORROR

Worlds of Cthulhu, Pegasus Press, 2008

A creature of nightmare bound too long inside a crumbling and abandoned mansion seeks its freedom, and the investigators might prove to be the perfect vessel to accomplish such ends. Set in the United Kingdom, this scenario is an ideal lead-in adventure to Secrets of Kenya (In Development)

THE BURNING STARS

Terrors from Beyond, Chaosium Inc., 2008

In Haiti the investigators recover in a United States military hospital suffering from ongoing and prolonged blackouts. The previous seven days of their lives vanished from their minds – not because they can’t remember what they encountered, but because remembering brings more pain than they are willing to endure. Terrors from Beyond is a book of independent scenarios set in the 1920s using pre-generated characters and playable in one or two sessions. The scenarios provide players and keepers with a unique roleplaying experience, featuring sophisticated plots and detailed characters that are not typically available in more generic adventures. (In Development)

SECRETS OF KENYA

Chaosium Inc., 2007

The Eastern regions of Africa are largely unexplored by Westerners. Beneath the desert sands, and lurking within the highlands lie mysteries far older than Western civilization, and indeed mankind. Long before the arrival of Arab traders or European explorers some of the native peoples learned to fear and worship great and terrible beings. Here within the heart of Africa, adventure and horror await those brave or foolhardy enough to seek them out.

Secrets of Kenya details the cultures, geography, and history of Kenya through the 1930s; provides an African bestiary; details several secret societies; and includes four adventures to jump start your own explorations of Kenya and the surrounding African wilds. Includes a short story "As Above, So Below" and four scenarios, "Madness of the Ancestors", "The Cats of Lamu", "Savage Lands" and "Wooden Death". See the Secrets of Kenya website for further details.

The cultural detailing, wide ranging stat guide and background information are invaluable for anyone planning to set a scenario or story in the area. As well as being a helpful resource for Keepers planning on running Masks of Nyarlathotep, Secrets of Kenya contains more than enough additional material for a few scenarios or even a short campaign. More collections in this vein are greatly needed for the genre. - Daniel Corrick, Yog-Sothoth.com

BEYOND THE EDGES

Secrets of San Francisco, Chaosium Inc., 2006

A hardboiled tale of horror in the City by the Bay. This is the story of a blackmailed banker worried sick because his daughter is missing, a struggling but talented painter shunned by the artistic community now forced to turn to crime, a gangster and pimp who has a good heart if only he can find it, and an evil darkness that lurks amongst the homeless of downtown San Francisco. The Black Madness lurks everywhere, claiming all who linger. Additional material in Secrets of San Francisco by David Conyers in this book concerns various cults, blasphemous collections and nightmarish locales in and about the city. The main body of this work is written by Cody Goodfellow, with additional material from Brian M. Sammons, Badger McInnes and others.

Very interesting scenario ... by far the best, set amongst San Francisco's homeless population - Kenneth Hite, Out of the Box, Gaming Report

The final (and longest) scenario, David Conyers' "Beyond the Edges" was easily the best for my money. This is a lengthy and tough investigation for experienced investigators, taking them through a number of intriguing San Francisco locations ... and beyond, for a direct encounter with an Outer God - Calum McDonald, Chaosium.com
